NCC girl cadets in Telangana, AP higher than national average

NCC Directorate, Secunderabad, for AP and TS has nine Group headquarters.

Hyderabad: The two Telugu states have more girl NCC cadets than the national average. The NCC directorate at Secunderabad, which covers both the states, has 1.6 lakh cadets of whom 32 per cent are girls. The national average is 26 per cent.

Air commodore P. Maheshwar, deputy director general, NCC, AP & TS, said that the directorate had made concerted efforts to enrol more girl cadets. He said the target was to have 33 per cent girl cadets in the NCC. Enrolment is still on, he said.

He said that the girl cadets were at par with their male counterparts. The girls’ contingent had won many laurels, including the first prize in the unarmed drill at the Republic Day parade at Vijayawada, while the boys came in second.

A student has to be 12 and a half years of age to enrol in the NCC. The corps are issued an ‘A’ certificate after a year’s training and a ‘B’ certificate after two years. The ‘C’ certificate comes after three years. Cadets have to take part in regular parades and complete a certain number of camps for the ‘B’ and ‘C’ certificates. While some camps are held locally, there are others which entail attachment with the regular military, apart from mountaineering, leadership courses, paratrooping and the prestigious Republic Day parade in New Delhi.

A student with a ‘C’ certificate is eligible for the NCC quota, said NCC officer Y. Srinivas. There are reservations for medical and engineering courses, he said. Parents enrol their children in NCC not only for the benefits of the reservation but also to expose them to the nationally integrated training camps.

NCC cadet P. Naina said she intended to join the defence forces after getting the C certificate. “I need not attend the written exams, as I am eligible under the special entry scheme,” she said.
