Khammam: ‘Seed ball bombing’, which was practiced during the Haritha Haram last year, has not yielded the expected results in Khammam and Bhadradri-Kothagudem districts and the administration has abandoned the exercise this year.
Officials said said the seed balls recorded a success rate of just 10 per cent.
Seed bombing is a method to raise saplings in arid areas and the lands that traditionally off-limits. Seeds of different varieties of plants are rolled into balls with clay. These balls are then disposed off in different area, with the expectation that the seeds germinate into trees.
The technique for creating seed balls was rediscovered by Japanese pioneer Masanobu Fukuoka, and is said to have recorded success in several places.
About five lakh seed balls were made last year and dropped in the forests. One of the reasons for the failure was that most of them were dropped in rocky areas.
