Tungabhadra Dam receives heavy inflow of water

A Tungabhadra Board official said the inflows were increasing over the past week.

ANANTAPUR: In the view of the heavy rain in the the Western Ghats in Karnataka, the Tungabhadra reservoir has been experiencing heavy inflows for the past few days. The reservoir had 22 tmc ft of water on Monday and was receiving water at the rate of 50,000 cusecs, an official said. There is still a long way to go, given that the full capacity of the Tungabhadra dam at Hospet is at 100.86 tmc ft.

The Tungabhadra Board had recently assessed that 130 tmc ft of water would be shared between Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and parts of Telangana state if the reservoir was full. A Tungabhadra Board official said the inflows were increasing over the past week. “The reservoir will be filled if inflows continue at the current rate from upstream areas”, an engineer from TB reservoir said. Last week, the dam received 1 tmc ft of water in a day. The reservoir has been the main source of drinking and irrigation water for the past five decades and Krishna water has been additional source to cover major parts of Rayalaseema.
