Kerala High Court to explore rehab of Puttingal fire victims

The court criticised the disaster management authority with the working of the disaster management authority.

Kochi: Kerala High Court on Wednesday decided to consider the scope of rehabilitation and compensation for the victims of Puttingal fireworks tragedy and whether there was any deficiency on the part of the disaster management authority in taking measures to prevent the tragedy.

The court also asked the state government to inform about the progress of the crime branch probe on the next day of hearing.

A division bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Thottathil B. Radhakrishnan and Justice Anu Sivaraman also directed the directorate of explosives to inform whether any prohibited substance was found in the explosives.

The court was considering a suo motu initiative based on a letter by Justice V. Chithambaresh, who had called for a ban on fireworks.

The court ordered that all related aspects of the explosives should be mentioned in the statement so that immediate measures have to be adopted to prevent such incident. The court criticised the disaster management authority with the working of the disaster management authority.

"There was no point in wailing over the loss after an unfortunate accident. The disaster management had to do the preventive process," it observed.
