Kozhikode: District administration to promote cotton in place of flex

He said that cotton fabric is the new trend in the market and printers had started working on them.

Kozhikode: Before parties started the campaign for the April 23 Lok Sabha elections in Kerala, the district administration has kicked off their campaign against flex boards.

It will promote cotton boards instead. The administration directed political parties to do away with massive flex-banners and cut-outs of netas and go for cotton clothes.

The flexes pollute the air by generating gases when it burns. Besides, it also pollutes water sources when thrown into water bodies.

It contains vinyl chloride monomer, a cancer-causing chemical. "The pollution control boards have already highlighted the hazardous nature of the flex boards to the environment," district collector Sambasiva Rao said on Monday.

"Hence we want everyone to keep away from them during the election campaign. We have hundreds of eco-friendly options for the campaign and cotton materials are one such."

He said that cotton fabric is the new trend in the market and printers had started working on them. "This will indirectly help the handloom weavers get good business," he said. The administration has decided to remove flex boards if seen anywhere in the district.
