Lathika Subhash likely to be Mahila Congress president

Congress president Rahul Gandhi interviewed five leaders from the state in New Delhi on Saturday for the post.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Senior Congress leader Lathika Subhash, 53, is likely to be the next State Mahila Congress president. The AICC may announce her selection soon. Congress president Rahul Gandhi interviewed five leaders from the state in New Delhi on Saturday for the post. The others were former All-India Youth Congress general secretary Deepthi Mary Varghese, Mahila Congress vice-president Fathima Rosna, Ernakulam district panchayat president Asha Sanil and Kozhikode corporation councillor Vidya Balakrishnan. Ms Lathika Subhash is now KPCC general secretary.

Ever since Ms Bindu Krishna was appointed as Kollam DCC president in December 2016, the post of Mahila Congress state president was lying vacant. Ms Sobha Ojha, former national Mahila Congress president, requested her to continue, and Ms Bindu Krishna has been managing the dual responsibilities. Later, Ms Susmita Dev MP, current Mahila Congress president, submitted a panel of five women leaders from the State.

“Lathika Subhash is expected to be the next state Mahila Congress president,” said a Congress leader. Ms Lathika Subhash has lost key postings on many occasions in the past. She was proposed as the Kottayam DCC president post, but she lost it at the last moment.

Deepthi, 42, has not been active in politics for the last few years, but has been trying to make a comeback. Malappuram-based Fathima Rosna is a lawyer and was the general secretary in the previous Mahila Congress committee headed by Shanimol Usman. Asha Sanil is a prominent ‘I’ group leader from Ernakulam and has also been serving as the district president of Mahila Congress. Vidya is Chevayur councillor in Kozhikode corporation and a state general secretary of Youth Congress.
