Hundreds seek justice for Wayanad farmer

The family of the late George has been fighting for the land illegally kept in the custody of forest department.

Kalpetta: Hundreds of farmers and activists participated in the 24-hour hunger strike organised here by the people’s action council seeking justice for the family of Kanjirathinal George, which concluded on Wednesday morning. Challenging the biting cold, the protesters stayed at the venue shouting slogans against the bureaucratic apathy.

In the concluding ceremony, action council chairman N.T. Suresh Babu said that a strong agitation will be held soon over the issue.

Treesa, daughter of Kanjirathinal George and her husband K.K. James have been on an indefinite sit-in in front of the collectorate, Kalpetta, since August 15, 2015. The family of the late George has been fighting for the land illegally kept in the custody of forest department for more than four decades.

Recently, Wayanad sub-collector Seeram Sambasivarao had submitted a report to the state government exposing the conspiracy by a section of the forest department officials who fabricated documents to deny the farming family their right over the land. Another report by the Vigilance department had also demanded action against the forest officials who conspired against the family.
