Case against Hyderabad journolists draws flak

'The media is just an observer serving a public purpose does not fall under the categories mentioned in the HC order.'

Hyderabad: Legal experts say the Cyberabad police case against a journalist for entering the UoH campus is baseless as the HC order prohibited only the entry of individuals and political parties, who harm the academic atmosphere, and not journalists.

The media is just an observer serving a public purpose does not fall under the categories mentioned in the HC order, they said.

The HC order issued following a petition from Professor Gali Vinod Kumar in April 2016, prohibited the entry of “persons, associations, and political parties, who conduct meetings on the premises of the Hyderabad Central University by giving provocative speeches to spoil the academic career of students, the academic atmosphere and ultimately harm the autonomous status of the university”.

Nowhere in the HC order, it was mentioned that the media is not allowed inside UoH.

"The police and UoH authorities are trying to intimidate the media by booking such a case," said Frontline correspondent Kunal Shankar, who was booked by the police for entering the UoH campus.
