Face-saving win for BJP in Gujarat, says Mamata; other reactions

Union Minister Nirmala Sitharaman lauded BJP workers saying that the win was facilitated by all workers doing their best.

Mumbai: Political reactions start pouring in soon after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) swept Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh Assembly elections.

A staunch critic of the Centre, West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee pointed out the close contention between Congress and BJP in Gujarat. Mamata tweeted, "I congratulate Gujarat voters for their very balanced verdict at this hour. It is a temporary and face-saving win, but it shows a moral defeat for BJP. Gujarat voted against atrocities, anxiety and injustice caused to the common people. Gujarat belled the cat for 2019."

In Maharashtra, Shiv Sena who has been taking dig at the BJP also reacted on the poll results in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh.

Going by the voting trends early on Monday, Shiv Sena said the voters were not happy with the BJP in Gujarat.

"We (the BJP) came to power in the country by citing the much-touted 'Gujarat model' (of development). If people in Gujarat are not happy (with the BJP) today, then understand their psyche, understand what people in the country feel," Sena MP Sanjay Raut said.

"The (BJP should) understand the mindset of people of Gujarat (and) the reason the people there are not happy," Raut said.

BJP’s win was welcomed by party leaders and its allies.

Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman lauded BJP workers for the win tweeting, "Undoubtedly, a major victory. The kind of work which party workers have done right from booth workers level till PM's level, everybody put their best foot forward and both Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh have recognised the good work going on in the name of development."

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and BJP leader Yogi Adityanath thanked the voters for the win, saying, "People have rejected divisive politics of Congress, this win is due to the dynamic leadership of BJP and the hard work of BJP workers."

Vijay Rupani, who was re-elected chief minister of Gujarat, on Monday, said "I would like to give credit for this victory to the people of Gujarat, also give assurance that in the coming 5 years BJP will work towards what the people of the state want."

Karnataka BJP President BS Yeddyurappa, whose state will be going to the polls soon said, "Victory in Gujarat and Himachal shows people have once again accepted PM Modi, his policies & Gujarat model. They've voted for development and against corrupt Congress. It'll have positive impact in Karnataka."

Himachal Pradesh BJP's chief minister candidate PK Dhumal, who lost to Congress's Rajinder Rana, placed the party's victory over his own defeat. "Personal loss is not of much importance. The gain that victory has brought to state BJP is important. Thankful to people of the state for voting for BJP. In politics, sometimes one wins, sometimes one loses. I was not expecting to lose, I will do an analysis," he said.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu congratulated the BJP for their win on twitter. "Congratulations BJP on winning the elections in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh. Wishing them all the best for their forthcoming tenure in governance", he tweeted.

Outgoing Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh accepted the defeat gracefully. "I accept the victory of BJP. I, being the CM, take full responsibility of our performance here. I hope Vikramaditya (Singh) keeps winning in future, like he won today," he said.
