DC Cares | No regard for parking rules outside wine outlets in Hyderabad

The problems are mostly noted from 6 pm to 10 pm as there are bikes, cars and scooters parked along the road during peak traffic hours

HYDERABAD: Lack of proper parking facilities at wine shops on main roads is adding to the traffic woes in the city especially in the peak evening hours. Boozers park bikes and cars in such a haphazard manner on the roads with scant regard for commuters who rush home after a hard day’s work.

The problems are mostly noted from 6 pm to 10 pm as there are bikes, cars and scooters parked along the road during peak traffic hours. At Kachiguda, wine shops and marriage halls are adjacent to each other and it becomes a major inconvenience during the wedding season.

In the evening hours, the same problem is witnessed at several busy areas in Secunderabad including East Marredpally, Karkhana, Tirmulgerry, ECIL and Neredmet crossroads as it often leads to heavy traffic jams. With parking areas sufficient for only 10 bikes, the rest of the vehicles are often parked on the roads in many of the wine shops across the city.

Vijay Naidu, a resident of ECIL says, "This is a big junction. There are buses and trucks which pass through this way. Even a Scooty parked wrongly can create a huge traffic jam. Despite the police imposing a fine, there is very little change."

In East Marredpally, it has been noted that cars are parked on roads outside homes, reducing the carriageway considerably. Bhaskar Srinath, a resident says, "For us, it is a daily complaint to the police. Though the police patrol vehicles pass around during evening hours, no action is taken against those who park their cars on roads."

Near Tarnaka Metro rail station, there is a wine shop and the residents of the adjoining Vijayapuri colony protested against granting licence to the liquor outlet, but it was still granted. The shop is on the main road between a bakery and showroom.

Joyce Jacob, a resident of Tarnaka who uses the metro rail says, "I walk home from the metro station. If I get late, I have to take a share auto as I cannot risk passing the wine shop. Apart from parked bikes and cars, there are people standing all the time. It is very scary for a woman to pass through the area at night."

Complaints are lodged time and again, online and offline, but there is little relief from the nuisance, say the local residents.
