Governor reviewing projects healthy trend: Tamilisai Soundararajan

Governor Banwarilal Purohit had stoked a major political controversy on Monday.

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu BJP on Friday termed Governor Banwarilal Purohit’s statement that he would visit every district to review implementation of development projects as “health trend” that should be “encouraged”. Tamilisai Soundararajan, the state BJP chief, told reporters in Coimbatore that she was at last to understand why people like Leader of Opposition M K Stalin were up in arms against the Governor for his review meeting with officials on development projects on Tuesday.

“People who should have problems (the AIADMK Government) is silent and in fact they are welcoming the review meetings saying it would encourage the officials in proper implementation. On the other hand, people who should not have problems surprisingly have problems with the review meetings,” she told reporters on her arrival at the Coimbatore Airport.

Governor Banwarilal Purohit had stoked a major political controversy on Monday when he held a review meeting with officials of the Coimbatore District administration on Smart City project evoking strong responses from Opposition parties who called this clear interference in the functioning of the state government. However, the ruling AIADMK and the BJP welcomed the Governor’s action saying he acted well within his rights.

Tamilisai said the governor has rights and powers to review projects under the Constitution and Banwarilal Purohit’s action should be “encouraged”. “Banwarilal Purohit’s review meeting is a healthy trend in politics and it should be encouraged. People who are opposing are basically those who think that the government should not be strengthened,” she said. Unfazed by the controversy, the Governor had announced that he would visit all districts of Tamil Nadu every year to review projects and their implementation.
