Madurai cops bust child-lifting racket, rescue kidnapped girl

It has now come to light that five members of an alleged child-lifting gang had stolen three-and-half-years old girl baby.

MADURAI: Acting quite diligently, the Madurai city police on Tuesday busted a racket by some miscreants allegedly involved in lifting of children belonging to Narikuravar families here and selling them to childless couples at other distant places.

On June 19 this year, when V. Sivagami, the mother of the baby and her family members were selling handicrafts, beads and trinkets on the platform opposite to Government Rajaji Hospital (GRH) in Madurai.

It has now come to light that five members of an alleged child-lifting gang had stolen three-and-half-years old girl baby Pavithra, daughter of Sivagami, and sold her to a couple from Sambavar Vadakarai village near Srivilliputhur, childless for nearly 17 years now, for a sum of Rs 1.20 lakh.

“We have secured the five members of the gang and rescued the child yesterday evening,” said V Sasi Mohan, deputy commissioner of police (Law & Order), Madurai city to reporters.
