Chennai: BE graduate jumps to death in shopping mall

Investigations revealed that the deceased Yuvaraj and his woman friend had known each other for three years now.

Chennai: A 27-year-old engineering graduate jumped to death from the food court on the third floor of the Forum Vijaya mall in Vadapalani on Tuesday afternoon, leaving Deepavali shoppers in jitters. He was talking with a woman friend and on a whim leapt from a height of about 40 feet, police said.

The deceased was identified as T. Yuvaraj (27), a native of Vellore. He had been staying at his relative’s house in Saligramam for the past two years and working as a tutor in institutes.

On Tuesday, around 11 am, Yuvaraj had met a woman friend, a native of Dindigul who works at an IT company in Coimbatore, at the mall. She had come to the city with her parents, police disclosed.

Police investigations revealed that the two of them were having lunch at the food court around 2.45 pm when Yuvaraj ran from their table and jumped. Police said that Yuvaraj fell head-on into the ground floor and sustained grievous head injuries. Mall staff and shoppers rushed to the man’s aid and moved him to a private hospital near the mall. However, Yuvaraj succumbed to his injuries.

A case has been registered and further investigations are on. In April last year, a class 12 girl leapt to death from the same mall.
