Stop manual cleaning of manholes in Hyderabad, says KT Rama Rao

Hyderabad: Commenting on the recent manhole tragedy at Ayyappa Society, the state’s minister for municipal administration K.T. Rama Rao said this week that focus must return on the use of equipment for the job.

“I have directed the officials from the city’s Sewerage Board not to permit manual cleaning of manholes; they should instead use equipment to avoid such unfortunate incidents, necessary precautionary measures should be taken.”

The board had announced Rs 10 lakh for the deceased and has assured to provide one outsourced job to the family members of the deceased.

On August 16, a sensitising training programme was conducted for sewerage workers of HMWS&SB on the use of safety equipment and the need for taking safety measures while dealing with sewerage problems. On August 13, three people died inside a manhole near Ayyappa Society in the city.
