Bangladeshis in Assam may get long-term work permit'

The security sources also said that India and Bangladesh have agreed to tighten vigilance along the borde.

Guwahati: In what may have a far-reaching political impact, the Centre is considering a proposal to provide long-term “bio-metric work permit” to all those who have been declared foreigners by the Foreigners Tribunal in Assam. Disclosing that the proposal, under the active consideration of the ministry of home affairs, also envisages plan to strip them from citizenship of India, authoritative security sources in the home ministry told this newspaper that such declared foreigners would neither have any political rights nor the right to buy immovable property.

Pointing out that the process of deporting a person declared as Bangladeshi by the Foreigners Tribunal was very slow and time taking, security sources said that pushing them back through the international border was not feasible as Bangladesh is also a sovereign nation.

Security sources said that modalities and other pros and cons of the proposal is being discussed in the home ministry which may soon put the proposal for the public scrutiny and opinion. The security sources also said that India and Bangladesh have agreed to tighten vigilance along the borde.
