Coimbatore: The Union minister for Urban Development, Mr Venkaiah Naidu is optimistic about passing the Goods and Services Tax (GST) bill soon by achieving consensus with all the opposition parties in Parliament.

Speaking at the inauguration of a seminar at the Coir Fair here on Sunday, he said, “the GST is very important and it is a revolutionary reform for industry. It is pending for the past eight years without consensus and there is need to put an end to this impasse.”

Mr Naidu further said, “the bill needs broad consensus and requires discussion. With understanding the needs of the younger generation and their demands, the bill is to be passed. We are working to reach a consensus and hope to pass the GST bill soon.”

Detailing about the growth of the coir industry, he said, “coir has multiple functions and it is being used traditionally. Six states engage in production of coir products and about seven lakh workers are dependent on this sector. Farmers and entrepreneurs should adopt modern technology to tap the market opportunities.” Union minister of state for MSME, Giriraj Singh, chairman of Coir Board, C P Radhakrishnan and various officials took part in seminar.
