Bengaluru: To raise awareness against 'child labour', the Child Rights and You (CRY), an NGO, organised an event on Church Street on Sunday and set up an experiential zone for the people to experience the pain child labourers go through.
The experiential zone recreated a factory and gave a real feel of the suffering of children. The milieu, sight, sound and smell of the labour environment were also mimicked at the zone.
“Changes happen when people feel for a cause. On this World Day against Child Labour, we wanted to make people experience the harsh conditions children go through during their childhood. Lack of education has a direct implication on a child getting into employment. This needs to stop and the motive of this event is to expose the truth of child labour to the public,” said Suma Ravi, Regional Director, CRY South.
Child labour is increasingly becoming acceptable as people tend to see it as a means for underprivileged families to make their ends meet. There are 10.13 million child labourers in the 5-14 age group in the country, as revealed in the 2011 census. Of them, 4,21,345 are in the state, and 66,622 in Bengaluru.
