Telangana: Students sell old papers, buy blankets for the poor

Two groups of B.Tech students from Miyapur and Serilingampally are distributing blankets to the poor.

Hyderabad: Two groups of B.Tech students from Miyapur and Serilingampally are distributing blankets to the poor and raising money by collecting old newspapers from local residents and selling them. Amit Pande, a part of ‘Youth for Nation’ said they got the idea when they saw the poor cover themselves with newspapers to keep out the chill.

“We decided to collect old newspapers from the public from nearby colonies and apartments. Our team from Miyapur and JP Nagar has collected 1,000 kg of newspapers and we got nearly Rs 10,000 by selling it,” he said. He said the group had Rs 5,000 left over and was planning to adopt the Chenchugudem near Wa-naparthy. “We have identified 250 people who need blankets. We will arrange for them,” he said.

Another team led by Srikanth from Serilingampally has collected about 430 kg of newspapers worth Rs 4,000. “We started collecting newspaper on December 10 and began distributing blankets from December 12 on the stretch from Miyapur Allwyn Colony to LB Nagar,” he said.
