Only ex-chief justice of High Court can be Lokayukta

Hyderabad: The Legislative Assembly on Thursday adopted two Amendment Bills unanimously. The Telangana Lokayukta (Amendment) Bill, 2017 was passed to make certain amendments to the Lokayukta Act, made in 1983 in undivided AP. The amendment enables appointment of a retired chief justice of the High Court as Lokayukta and a retired judge of the High Court as Upa Lokayukta, as against sitting judges previously.

The amendment enables the committee comprising the Chief Minister, the Assembly Speaker and the Council chairman and leaders of the Opposition in both Houses to make recommendations to the government on the appointments. The amendment enables their reappointment in other positions after they complete their tenures.

The Telangana Charitable and Hindu Religious Institutions and Endowments (Amendment) Bill, 2017 was also approved unanimously. The Act made in 1987 was amended to extend salaries for priests and staff working in temples through treasuries department on par with government employees. The amendment was made to use funds sanctioned under Common Good Fund for the development of temples and extending Doopa Deepa Naivedhyam scheme to 3,000 more temples.
