Odisha: Public refrigerator installed to feed the poor

Named Annapurna Community Fridge Project', the aim behind it is to collect surplus food items from donors.

BHUBANESWAR: Bhubaneswar Knights Round Table and Bhubaneswar Queens Ladies Circle, two voluntary organisations, on Monday installed a community refrigerator at Sainik School Square here that would be used to store surplus food donated by individuals and restaurants.

The collected food would be used to feed the poor in the capital. Named ‘Annapurna Community Fridge Project’, the aim behind it is to collect surplus food items fr-om donors, restaurants and hotels and store them in the refrigerator. This would then be served to the needy people free of cost. The foods will undergo a quality check before being given to the people. The community fridge was inaugurated by Bhubaneswar (North) MLA Priyadarshi Mishra.

“It is a noble initiative. Surplus food items which would have gone waste or dumped in the dustbin can now be served to the needy in a very dignified manner. There shall be strict quality check of the stored foodstuffs before being served to the beneficiaries,” said the lawmaker. The two voluntary organisations have planned to install four more fridges at Patia, Saheed Nagar, Old Town and Bhub-aneswar Railway Station in the city.
