Pon Radhakrishnan seeks TN support on survey for Enayam port

CM indicated that right from her first tenure as CM, she had been keen on implementing the Colachel port project.

Chennai: Union minister of state for road transport, highways and shipping Pon Radhakrishnan called on Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa at the secretariat on Friday and requested the state’s support for the commencement of survey for preparation of the detailed project report for the development of Enayam port (Colachel). Assuring that the construction of the port is at a place nearly 1 km away from Enayam and Enayam itself will not be affected by the construction, Radhakrishnan further briefed the CM that the port will be built by reclaiming land from the sea and no existing habitation will be affected.

A statement from the secretariat said that the CM indicated that right from her first tenure as CM, she had been keen on implementing the Colachel port project. Lack of support from successive Central governments had meant that the project could not be implemented. The CM also assured the Union minister that the state is keen on implementing the project, as the Centre would provide all necessary support. Mr Radhakrishnan also sought the support of Tamil Nadu by providing land to establish a Rubber Research Center in Kanniyakumari for which the CM assured that that the proposal would be expedited.

Radhakrishnan also requested that the East Coast Road, south of Puducherry, may be handed over to the National Highways Authority of India for upgradation as a National Highway. To this the CM sought an assurance from the Union minister that in case the East Coast Road, south of Puducherry is taken over as a National Highways, adequate priority and funding should be accorded to ensure that the road is well maintained and noted that TN already taking up the upgradation and improvement work in the Thoothukudi - Tiruchendur- Kanniyakumari stretch of the East Coast Road. Chief secretary P. Rama Mohana Rao, adviser to government Sheela Balakrishnan and senior state officials were also present during the meeting.
