Kochi: Schools on a drive to help flood victims

Educational institutions across state come forward to contribute to relief activities.

KOCHI: Even as most parts of the state have been plagued by heavy floods and rain, many schools have become relief centres, especially state schools, while several others have come forward to contribute to the relief activities in various ways.

In a week-long exercise, the students, teachers and the management of Toc H Public School, Vyttila, collected rice (450 kg), sugar (410 kg), tea (75 kg), wheat powder (400 kg), provisions (300 kg) and cooking oil (200 kg). Large quantities of paste, brush, soap and other sanitary items were also collected and stored in the school for distribution. The total collection can support 300 families for two weeks. They were handed over to Mr Hibi Eden MLA by Dr. K. Varghese, founder director & manager and Mr. Juby Paul, principal of the school.

Mary Matha Higher Secondary School, Thrikkakara, donated provisions and other relief materials for 41 families staying in relief camps in the 11th and 12th wards in Eloor municipality. Volunteers from NSS, NCC and Scouts of Panavally NSS High School, Cherthala, collected food materials and other articles and distributed them among the fellow students of the school who were hit by floods. Nehru Memorial Model School, Attupuram, Kadakkal, is on a drive to collect money from students, teachers, parents, management and well-wishers for the flood victims.

The students of Global Public School, Thiruvaniyoor, collected nearly a truck-load of essential items from the students. The children donated over 100 kilos each of pulses and sugar and three sackfuls each of biscuits and rusks. Candles, toothbrushes, toothpaste, sanitary napkins, basic school supplies, soap, bleaching powder, Dettol, medicines, towels, bed sheets and other essentials were also donated.

The Asian School of Architecture and Design Innovations (ASADI) in Kochi contributed Rs 1.5 lakh to the chief minister's distress relief fund. Prof. B. R. Ajit, chairman and director, ASADI, handed over the cheque to Mr Hibi Eden MLA.

Sai Krishna Public School, Chenkal, Thiruvananthapuram, collected Rs 10,000.
