Bengaluru: Met warned, officials slept, we paid price!

We had issued a warning that districts in south Karnataka including Bengaluru and Mandya would be hit by heavy rains: official

Bengaluru: A MET department official confirmed to Deccan Chronicle on Wednesday that the MET department had in fact issued a warning three days before Bengaluru was lashed by heavy rains on Monday into Tuesday, deepening the mystery on why the BBMP did not activate rescue and clean-up efforts “We had issued a warning that districts in south Karnataka including Bengaluru and Mandya would be hit by heavy rains,” the official told DC.

The city experienced its heaviest rainfall since 1890 - that's a gap of 127 years - when a torrential downpour led to south and east Bengaluru being inundated, with roads, office buildings, and homes In a scene reminiscent of the July 2016 downpour, many areas in the city witnessed waist high flooding and sewage water entering houses.

Koramangala and HSR Layout were the most affected. Shantinagar, Wilson Garden, K R Puram, Anugraha Layout, Ulsoor, Vivek Nagar, Murugesh Palya on Old Airport Road and Gurappana Palya on Bannerghatta Road were other areas that witnessed flooding on Independence Day.

The saving grace was that no lakes had been breached. With the city receiving 14.4 cm of rain which doubled the record set in 2009 when the city witnessed 7.7 cm of rain.
