No Neet-based admissions for Ayush courses, says TN CM

TN government opposed Neet for last two years.

Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister announced that admissions to Indian Medical courses including Ayurveda, Siddha and Homeopathy courses will be based on plus-2 marks for the current academic year.

The decision to continue with the plus-2 marks based admissions was taken at a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Minister K. Palaniswami at the secretariat on Monday here.

In February, the union ministry of AYUSH (for Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy) had asked all the state governments to conduct Neet-based admissions to the alternative medical courses.

Tamil Nadu government has opposed Neet-based admissions in the last two years.

“The decision of the central government to adopt Neet-based admissions to Indian medicine courses is contradicting the state's policy and the Tamil Nadu Regulation of Admission in Professional Courses Act, 2006. Hence, we have decided to conduct admission to AYUSH courses based on plus-2 marks. The state government has already conveyed its stand to the central government,” a release from the state government said.

There are over 1,700 seats available in 29 AYUSH colleges in the state.

It further said the fact that the Centre had not made any amendments in respect of admissions in the Indian Medicine Central Council Act was also taken into consideration while arriving at this decision.

Deputy Chief minister O. Panneerselvam, School education minister K.A. Sengottaiyan, Health minister C. Vijayabaskar and others participated in the meeting.
