New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday directed Kerala government to strictly implement the recommendations of a committee headed by Justice S. Sri Jagan on payment of compensation to those who suffered dog bites. A three-judge bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices A.M. Khanwilkar and D.Y. Chandrachud passed this order on a petition filed by Jose Sebastian (husband of the stray dog victim).
Senior counsel V. Giri, appearing for Kerala assured the court that the recommendations would be implemented. The committee received claims from 402 victims of dog bites and recommendations have been made in appropriate cases, the court was told.
Counsel V.K Biju submitted that all the victims were daily wagers, ladies or small children, all of them are poor and none of them has any protection and therefore, the compensation has to be paid urgently. Mr. Biju submitted that the some of them are extremely serious cases, as all of them cannot come back to the normal life Taking note of the report of the Commission, the Bench in a brief order made it clear that it is the duty of the state Government to implement the commission reports by paying the compensation.
