Film director Bharathiraja seeks advance bail

According to Bharathiraja, the police had registered a FIR after more than four months based on the complaint lodged by V.G. Narayanan on January 19.

Chennai: The Madras high court has directed the government advocate to get instructions from authorities concerned on an anticipatory bail petition filed by film director Bharathiraja, who apprehended arrest in connection with a criminal case registered against him for allegedly terming Vinayagar as imported god while addressing a public gathering in January. Justice P. Rajamanickam posted to May 17, further hearing of the petition filed by Bharathiraja.

According to Bharathiraja, the police had registered a FIR after more than four months based on the complaint lodged by V.G. Narayanan on January 19. This had been done deliberately because he had been criticising the Central and state governments recently for failing to constitute the Cauvery Management Board.

The complaint lodged against him was false and baseless. He has not said anything with an intention of insulting the religious feelings of any community during the speech delivered by him to support lyricist Vairamuthu, who was humiliated for an article penned by him on Vaishnavite saint Andal, he added.
