Chennai/Ariyalur: Irate residents of TG Anna Nagar in Ambattur will continue their strike on Wednesday against a newly opened wine shop on Ayapakkam Road, as official inspection did not yield an assured closure of the outlet.
“The old Tasmac outlet is a few blocks away from the new one. The wine shop will affect residents on both sides of the Ayapakkam Road. We had protested on May 10, after which the shop was closed for a day,” said a resident, advocate G. Pugazvendan.
He added that the road, which has a residential area on both its sides already, witnesses a spate of accidents due to water tankers on the crowded road.
“A girl was killed when a water tanker ran into her. The road is already congested and we don’t want further crowd due to a wine shop here. After our agitation, the officials decided to close it temporarily but we want permanent closure,” he added.
He further said that officials failed to give a written order stating that the wine shop would be closed down, owing to which the protest would continue on Wednesday.
The Tasmac district manager told Deccan Chronicle that the shop has been shut as of now. “Regarding further closure, we will have an inspection to see if that is feasible, and will be closed after that,” he said.
Women break IMFL bottles
A section of women residents of RS Mathur went on a rampage against a Tasmac shop in their village.
Official sources said people had been demanding to shift the Tasmac shop from their village for a quite long time. The authorities did not take any action.
Furious over this, the women agitators assembled in front of the Tasmac shop. On seeing them the person in-charge of the shop locked the shop and escaped from the scene.
Women agitators gained entry into the shop by break opening the locks, and broke all the IMFL bottles in the presence of police and revenue officials. The women agitators told the officials that they would not hesitate to destroy the Tasmac shop if authorities attempted to open the shop again.
