Heavy rain with winds affects power supply in Delta districts in Chennai

The official noted that since the electronic voting machines were battery operated, the power outages did not affect the voting fully.

Chennai: Heavy rains combined with strong winds affected power supply for a few hours in several parts of the state including in Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam and Ramanathapuram during the polling.

“We have restored power in all the places with help of special teams formed to meet any eventuality arising out of the low pressure formed in the Bay of Bengal during the polling day on Monday,” said a senior Tangedco official.

The official noted that since the electronic voting machines were battery operated, the power outages did not affect the voting fully. “In the polling booths, polling officials and political party agents require lighting to verify the voter’s details,” the official added. With the dark clouds, there was no lighting in the polling booths and officials were made to manage the voting with candle and mobile phone lights in several places.

On Monday, Thanjavur, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Ramanathapuram, Sivagangai and Tiruchy districts witnessed heavy rainfall along with strong winds. “The rain along with winds uprooted several trees leading to damages of over head power cables in Pattukottai, Peravurani and Adiramapattinam areas in Thanjavur district affecting the power supply for long hours. As many as 11 feeders were affected,” the official said, adding that chief engineer of Demand Side Management has been asked to oversee the power restoration in Pattukottai and two gangs of 15 workers were rushed to the region from Tiruchy.

“We have formed special teams headed by chief engineer of Tiruchy region to oversee Nagapattinam and Tiruvarur districts, while CEs of Madurai and Tirunelveli were camped in Ramanathapuram and Tuticorin districts. Chief engineer of Non Conventional Energy Sources is monitoring in Theni camp,” the official said.

In the city, parts of Tondiarpet, Vysarpadi, Seven Wells and Chintadripet witnessed power outages ranging from five minutes to 20 minutes following tripping of a feeder in Tondiarpet 230 kv substation. “Feeder tripped after the drizzling on Monday morning,” the official said, adding that it did not affect the polling.
