Chennai: Golden Rock workshop gets award for energy efficiency

Electricity consumption of the workshop has been brought down from 74,37,390 units in 2014-15 to 58,22,050 units in 2016-17.

CHENNAI: The Bureau of Energy Efficiency of Ministry of Power has awarded the prestigious 5-star label to Golden Rock Workshop, Tiruchy of Southern Railway for its energy efficiency initiatives.

According to the railway press release, the Golden Rock Workshop had received first prize in National Energy Conservation Award in 2017 from the Bureau of Energy Efficiency. Following the national award, the Bureau of Energy Efficiency had awarded the 5-star label for the energy saving initiatives, the release added.

The Energy Management System (EnMS) established by the workshop to continuously monitor and improve its energy performance has resulted in reducing carbon footprint by a number of measures. Electricity consumption of the workshop has been brought down from 74,37,390 units in 2014-15 to 58,22,050 units in 2016-17. Similarly, consumption of coke has also come down from 131 tons during 2014-15 to 20 tons in 2016-17. The workshop also saved '1.11 crore these measures during 2016-17, the Southern Railway said.

The 90-year-old workshop is engaged in railway manufacturing and repairing activities including periodical overhauling of diesel locomotives and steam locomotives, coaching stock maintenance, wagon manufacturing and other works.The Golden Rock Workshop also had bagged the National Excellent Energy Efficient Unit Award from Confederation of Indian Industry in 2017.
