Chandi Yagam gains immense popularity

The chief minister performed Ayuta Chandi Yagam at Erravelli in Medak district.

KARIMNAGAR: Taking a cue from Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao, people, in particular, the managements of educational institutions and temples are performing Chandi Yagam in various parts of Karimnagar district. The chief minister performed Ayuta Chandi Yagam at Erravelli in Medak district from December 23 to 27, last year, seeking peace in the world.

The management of Alphores educational institutions held Nava Chandi Yagam at Kothapalli, one of its campuses. This is the first time that the management of Aphores educational institutions organised a spiritual event. A few days ago, a businessman in Karimnagar performed Shata Chandi Yagam. A similar yagam will be held on the premises of the newly-built Durga Devi temple on the outskirts of Theegalaguttapalli, near the city, from February 19 to 21.

Puranam Maheswara Sarma, who spearheaded the Yagam at Erravelli, said followers of goddess Devi (who is worshipped as Durga, Shakti, Kali, Saraswathi, etc.) Chandi Yagam was being performed by many since ages. "It is true that it gained popularity only after Chief Minister Mr Chandrasekhar Rao performed it in a grand manner for four days and the media highlighted it,” he said. According to Mr. Sarma, there are four types of rituals in the ancient scriptures of the Hindu mythology: Nava, Shata, Sahasra and Ayutha.

Many of the devotees can afford to perform Sahasra Chandi Yagam. Only a few perform Ayutha Chandi Yagam as it involves a lot of expenditure and it is also an elaborate ritual considering its expenditure and sophisticated process. He spearheaded the Ayuta Chandi Yagam of Mr. Chandrasekhar Rao.
