Central University of Kerala students go on strike

The students took out processions on main campus at Periye as part of the protest.

Kasaragod: Central University of Kerala (CUK) Students’ Council on Monday boycotted classes on the campuses raising demands which included release of scholarships, and better library facilities. The students also took out processions on main campus at Periye as part of the protest.

Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, Students’ Council president Nikhil Subheesh said that some of the major demands of the students include proper facilities in hostel, distribution of scholarships and fellowship for students and scholars, timely publishing of examination results and proper library facilities.

“We had submitted a memorandum on November 21 last year demanding various needs. However, there was no favorable response from the university authorities on the matter. That’s how we decided to conduct a protest on Monday boycotting classes,” he said.

Vice-Chancellor Prof G. Gopakumar said that the university will address the needs of the students immediately. “We are not against their demands and we are happy to sort out the issues raised,” he told DC. “We were bit delayed in responding to it due to various matters including faculty interviews, NAAC visit etc. We will soon rectify the issues pointed out by the students and we have no animosity towards them.”
