Andhra Pradesh: Identify potential risks Trade body

The industries need to conduct a detailed analysis to assess risks involved by roping in authorised safety professionals.

Guntur: Safety should be our first motto. An essential component of safety management is identification of potential hazards to establish proactive physical or procedural controls to reduce safety risk exposure. How well we are equipped is vital if any untoward incidents happen whether on the road or in an industrial unit, said G. Sambasiva Rao, president of AP Chambers of Commerce and Industry Federation (APCCIF) during a seminar on “Safety Management,” organised by APCCIF in association with ASSE & ISHARE.

He also said precaution and preventive measures need to be taken to create accident-free environment. On road safety, we have taken up the matter with the ministry of road transport to develop parking lots on 100 acres of land for parking yards on the highways so that vehicles, mainly trucks, can be parked safely instead of by the roadside to avoid accidents and loss of human lives. He reiterated the need for regular awareness campaigns and seminars in the larger interest of society. G.N. Venkatasivasubramanyam, Chennai-based consultant and director of Sriram Safety and Quality Management Services, delivered a keynote address on layers of protection analysis (LOPA).

He underlined the need for implementing guidelines notified for public utilities and residential and commercial establishment in toto. On the industrial front, the need for similar action was paramount. The industries need to conduct a detailed analysis to assess risks involved by roping in authorised safety professionals after conducting a safety audit and preparing for an onsite emergency/disaster management plan, he added.
