Kerala floods: WB-ADB team visits district

Collector makes detailed presentation regarding losses.

Kochi: The eight-member team including officials of World Bank and Asian Development Bank visited flood-hit areas in Paravur, Aluva, Kunnathunadu, Kochi and Muvattpuzha taluks in Ernakulam district on Saturday to assess the extent of damage. During a meeting, district collector Muhammad Y. Safirulla made a detailed presentation before the officials regarding the loss in various sectors. He also briefed about the preparatory measures taken by the district administration to face the extreme natural calamity. The district has suffered total loss of Rs 8113.81 crore with widespread damage to various sectors ranging from housing, infrastructure to agriculture and environment.

A team visited Chendamangalam handloom societies which were completely devastated in floods. The officials asked details of the number of looms damaged, the functioning of handloom societies and the average earnings of a weaver. The officials also took stock of the damage caused to Paliam Palace museum and nalukettu in Chenda-mangalam, a heritage monument. Several ancient manuscripts and unique antiques were damaged in floods and efforts to revive them are on. The World Bank officials have agreed to provide necessary support to revive the damaged manuscripts and antiques.

Another team visited the pokkali paddy fields in Pallipuram panchayat in Cherayi where more than 90 per cent of fields were damaged. World Bank officials assessed the extent of damage to primary healthcare centre at Eloor, which suffered loss of Rs 40 lakhs. Top revenue and health officials accompanied the delegation.
