Supreme Court may use wedding cost details to decide cases

The bench asked Additional Solicitor General P.S. Narasimha to assist the court in the matter.

Hyderabad: The Supreme Court recently said it may consider the question whether the details of expenses incurred on a marriage be jointly furnished to the marriage officer in order to avoid future disputes over allegations of dowry.

A bench comprising Justices Adarsh Kumar Goel and S. Abdul Nazeer, while dealing with a matrimonial matter said that it may also examine the question of whether a part of the expenditure set aside for a marriage should be deposited in the wife’s name.

The bench said, “We may consider the question whether the details of expenditure incurred on marriage should be jointly furnished to the jurisdictional marriage officer to avoid future disputes about the allegation of demand of dowry.”

While issuing the notice to the Union of India asking it to work out the modalities to record the expenses of marriage, the bench asked Additional Solicitor General P.S. Narasimha to assist the court in the matter.
