KT Rama Rao warns erring drivers

Suggests no insurance benefits for traffic rules violators.

Hyderabad: Claiming insurance for damage to vehicles due to road accidents could become difficult for traffic rule violators if minister K.T. Rama Rao’s proposals are implemented.

Mr Rama Rao on Friday asked the Transport ministry to work out modalities to introduce a point system for motorists depending on the number of traffic violations they are involved in. The more points they accumulate, the more difficult it will become for them to claim insurance benefit. He said this point-cum-ticket system is being followed in the US.

He also suggested holding refresher courses for drivers and added that road engineering would help in bringing down the number of accidents. He noted that the road engineering was not up to the mark at Punjagutta, where eight-year-old P. Ramya was killed recently following a road accident.

There is a heavy vehicle driving training institute in Sircilla where 20,000 drivers can be given refresher courses in a year. “We are planning to have such institutes to train at least 5,000 drivers a year in every district,” the minister said, adding that speed governors should be installed because national highways and other roads had been not only beenwidened but also are being very well.
