Hyderabad: Decathlon fined for selling bags with brand logo

Hyderabad: The GHMC on Friday penalised Decathlon for selling branded plastic bags for Rs 10. This apart, the authorities found that the store had been running the business with an expired trade licence.

The GHMC imposed a fine of Rs 25,000 for selling plastic bags with Decathlon’s logo on it. The corporation said that according to recent court orders, store keepers should not sell plastic bags when the logo was printed on it.

Khairatabad zonal commissioner Musharraf Faruqui said that Decathlon at Irram Manzil was running the business with an expired trade licence.

He said the corporation would serve notice on Monday. Mr Faruqui said that the store owner would be given three days to submit documents.

For the past fortnight, the Telangana State Consumers Information and Redressal Centre has penalised a slew of outlets for charging customers for branded plastic bags.

The understanding is that branded bags are to be given free. Some outlets have argued that they are selling the bags. State authorities, however, are citing court orders to discourage outlets from charging for branded bags.
