Chennai: Twenty one retired DGPs dropped in for hot tea and a flood of nostalgia at the State police headquarters on Thursday evening following invitation from DGP T. K. Rajendran, who had wanted to set a healthy tradition and very warm one at that by getting the former heads of the force to come together now and then.
“There were not just handshakes but lots of backslapping and laughter as the ex-DGPs recalled their great times together. It was just fantastic”, said an IG, who was among the large gathering of senior IPS officers invited for the unique get-together.
It appeared that DGP Rajendran had thought of this initiative, the first of its kind in the state’s police history, after an incident that troubled him recently. A 1948 batch IPS officer T. N. Krishnaswami had mentioned to him some time back that he would like to drop by at the police headquarters just for a cup of tea and sharing some pleasant moments by the sea. “Being a very elderly gentleman, he passed away two months ago and his wish could not be fulfilled. This apparently troubled the DG somewhat and he thought he must arrange for this get-together of past DGPs without further delay”, said another senior officer, who attended the special evening at the Chief’s Office.
The DGP’s office identified about 30 surviving ex-DGPs and extended them invitations. A few of them could not make it and 21 turned up, all smiles. -
They must have been even happier when they got back to their homes and recounted to their families the memorable TKR evening—by the way, it also happened to be his birthday.
