A heir soon, joy for the Mysuru royals

The royal couple are set to celebrate their first wedding anniversary on June 27 after a gala wedding last year.

Mysuru: Mysuru, could soon have a heir to the royal throne with Trishika Devi Wadiyar, wife of the 27th scion of the Mysuru royal family, Sri Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar, said to be pregnant and in the fourth month of her pregnancy.

The royal couple are set to celebrate their first wedding anniversary on June 27 after a gala wedding last year.

Dharmadhikaari of Mysuru royal family, Vidwan Sri Janardhan Iyengar, told Deccan Chronicle that there could soon be an addition to the royal family with the delivery likely to happen by October end or the beginning of November- after Dasara which will be celebrated in September this year. However royal family members could not be reached to confirm the happy news.

The Wadiyars have borne the brunt of a royal curse from the seventeenth century, which has left alternate kings childless. Prof. Shalva Pille Iyengar, Head of the Department of Ancient History and Archaeology at Karnataka State Open University (KSOU), explained the curse saying, “In 1610, Alamelamma, wife of Thirumalaraya, a royal owing allegiance to the Vijaynagar kingdom, had cursed the Mysuru royal family following a conflict. She is said to have cursed them saying ‘Malangi maduvaagi, talakadu maralagi, Mysuru maharajarige makkalaagadirali (the scions of the royal family shall not have children).

Mr Janardhan Iyengar said, “ In the recent past, only alternate scions have had children. The 22nd scion, Sri Mummadi Krishnarja Wadiyar had adopted Sri Chamaraja Wadiyar who was coronated as the 23rd scion, and he had three daughters and two sons including Sri Nalvadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar and Sri Narasimha Raj Wadiyar. And Sri Narasimharaja Wadiyar had three daughters and one son, Sri Jayachamarendra Wadiyar. But the 24th scion, Sri Nalwadi Krishnadevaraya Wadiyar did not have children and so, his brother’s son, Sri Jayachamarajendra Wadiyar was coronated as the 25th scion. He had five daughters and one son, Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wadiyar," he said. Since the 26th scion, Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wadiyar did not have children, after his demise on December 10, 2012, Mr Yaduveer Gopal Raj Urs, grandson of Mr Wadiyar’s eldest sister Maharajakumari Gayathri Devi and son of Tripurasundara Devi and Mr Swarup Anand Gopal Raj Urs, was officially adopted by Maharani Pramoda Devi Wadiyar at a ceremony held at Mysuru Palace on February 23, 2015. After the adoption, he was renamed Sri Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar. On May 28, 2015, Yaduveer was officially anointed as the 27th Maharaja of the 600 year old Wadiyar dynasty. He got married to Trishika Kumari, daughter of Harshvardhan Singh and Rajkumari Maheshree Kumari of the Rajkot royal family on June 27 last year.
