Bank seeks nod to write off loans of flood victims

The bank will write off a loan of Rs 2.5 lakh taken by an Adimali native, Enson, for the renovation of his house.

Kottayam: The Idukki district cooperative bank has decided to recommend to the government to write off the loans taken by those who lost their properties in the deluge last year.

The bank will write off a loan of Rs 2.5 lakh taken by an Adimali native, Enson, for the renovation of his house. He had pledged the house and ten cents of land to avail of the loan, but lost everything in the floods. The bank took the decision on the basis of a report submitted by the branch at Adimali, said Mr P.R. Rajesh, general manager of the district cooperative bank.

The report said that Enson's land was worthless now. The bank will take a sympathetic attitude to all who face similar situations, Mr Rajesh told Deccan Chronicle.

The report will be submitted to the bank adalat to be held from January 21 to 23.

The bank also decided to suspend this year's repayment for the education loan taken by Lizy George for her son. She has lost two acres of land in the deluge.

The bank has not received any specific directions from the state government on waving off the loan. But it is doing so using its discretionary power, he said.

Widespread damage to properties and crops had occurred in Idukki district in the floods. As per the district administration's data, 1, 535 houses were destroyed, 3,061 damaged and 11, 530.64 hectares of crops lost since May 29.
