Trump may reduce no of H-1B visas to Indians: KP Fabian

Former diplomat K.P. Fabian says Trump will take time to develop a strategic understanding of India.

Thiruvananthapuram: Former diplomat K.P. Fabian has said that US President-elect Donald Trump might review the procedure for granting H-1B visa reducing the number granted to Indians.

Trump is a critic of globalisation, though he himself is its beneficiary and even owned golf courses in Scotland. However, he had opposed the offshore operation of American companies even forcing Ford to cancel its plan for a plant in Mexico, Mr Fabian told Deccan Chronicle on Sunday.

He was in the city to attend a seminar at the political science department of the Kerala University on Monday.

Mr Fabian said that it would take time for Trump to develop a strategic understanding of India as his experience was restricted to that of a CEO without foreign policy experience. However, he would have been aware of Indians as workers of his Trump towers.

Trump would maintain a good relationship with Russia compared to President Barrack Obama who demonised Vladimir Putin resulting in his failure to establish good relations with him.

The US and Russia may work together in global hotspots like Syria for coordinated attacks on the Islamic State. Trump may even force Russia to throw out Bashar Hafez al-Assad whom Obama had targeted in 2010, but failed to replace him.

The improved relations with Putin’s Russia and US were beneficial to India as Russia had been forced to play second fiddle to China as the US under Obama had ostracised him, Mr Fabian said.
