APMC poll results encouraging: Siddaramaiah

Polls to APMC are conducted sans party symbols but it surely provides a window of opportunity to political parties to correct themselves.

Bengaluru: Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah on Sunday described the outcome of the Agriculture Produce Market Committee(APMC) election acrossthe state as proof that voters were looking up to the Congress as its saviour.

Speaking to reporters after inaugurating Chitra Sante, an annual art fest organized by Chitrakala Parishat here, Mr Siddaramaiah said, "The voting pattern gives a glimpse of how voters might behave in the Assembly elections. Of course, the APMC polls per se are not a full referendum, but it surely indicates how the electorate might swing in future."

According to him, the polls to APMC are conducted sans party symbols but it surely provides a window of opportunity to political parties to correct themselves. "As far as the Congress is concerned the outcome of this poll is surely a happy one as most APMCs have been won by our party supported candidates. It only reinforces our political stand thatd the state government's welfare schemes have been well received by the electorate," he claimed.

In response to a question, the CM shot back that the Congress was strong enough to win elections on its own rather than fish in troubled waters (read exploit the feud between B.S. Yeddyurappa and K.S.Eshwarappa) "It is BJP's internal matter and Congress will not waste its energy and time to keep a watch on Yeddyurappa and Eshwarappa's power struggle, instead the party will woo the electorate in its own style and in its traditional manner," the CM said.

Answering a question, Mr Siddaramaiah asserted that the state government was committed to file its petition before the Mahadayi River Dispute tribunal to claim its share of water. "We are committed to the struggle of farmers in north-Karnataka," he said.
