Karnataka: Youth these days don't celebrate with same fervour

People were much more sensitive and recognised the sacrifices of our freedom fighters.

It was August 14, 1947 when India achieved her Independence. I was seven- years- old then and was living in Mangaluru. It was quite a festive atmosphere that evening. My parents took to the central maidan in Mangaluru where we celebrated the birth of our nation in a grand manner.

Youth these days don’t celebrate Independence Day with the same fervour that we did in 1947, 1948 and 1949. It was a different time then. People were much more sensitive and recognised the sacrifices of our freedom fighters, who laid down their lives so that we could enjoy a future with freedom.

Youth today don’t have the same kind of affection and respect for our freedom fighters. For many people today Independence Day is just a holiday to be enjoyed and nothing more. This should not be the case. Youth need to recognise and respect the sacrifices that freedom fighters made for our country.

Yes, there still are some issues that need to be fought for. Providing social justice and combating poverty and bad administration are some of the few things that the youth of this country need to fight for today. India has come a long way , but there is still a lot to be changed and accomplished.
