Rattled by defections, Jana Reddy offers to quit puts up a brave face

Uttam briefs Rahul in Delhi; Digvijay to reach Hyderabad today to discuss political situation in the state.

Hyderabad: The spate of defections appears to have left the Telangana Congress leadership rattled, to the extent that Leader of the Opposition K. Jana Reddy offered to quit all posts to strengthen the party. “This is not the Telangana we expected. Students, youths, employees, intellectuals and all other sections of people should condemn the TRS’ unethical act of luring Congress MLAs and MPs. I am ready to sacrifice all the posts. I will call on AICC president Sonia Gandhi and convey this to her. It’s time people stand up and save democracy,” Mr Jana Reddy said.

He said that the party would seek disqualification of the defectors and if needed, move court. In another development, TPCC president N. Uttam Kumar Reddy met AICC vice-president Rahul Gandhi and AICC general-secretary Digvijay Singh and apprised them of the political situation back home and the latest defections from the party to the TRS. “I apprised them about the defections and the current political situation in the state. Digvijay will be in Hyderabad tomorrow. We will discuss all issues threadbare,” Uttam Kumar Reddy said.

Mr Singh will be in the city on Wednesday to preside over the TPCC coordination committee meeting which will discuss burning public issues, programmes to be undertaken and of course, the defection of party leaders, including elected representatives. “While we are asking the TRS government to fulfil electoral promises, it is luring our partymen. Sonia Gandhi gave Telangana, but TRS is ungrateful to her and polluting politics. People expected a clean and efficient government, not this kind of a rule. TRS and Congress expected Telangana to be a role model in the country, but the TRS-led state is becoming a role model for defections,” Mr Jana Reddy said.

He continued: “Students, youths, employees, intellectuals and other sections of the society should protect democracy, fight for social justice and clean politics. I feel sad for Congress leaders and workers who put in their sweat and blood for party.”
