Telangana gathers views on triple talaq Bill

The TS and AP governments have instructed their minorities welfare departments to take the views of the community.

Hyderabad: The governments in the two Telugu States are treading cautiously before sending their views to the Centre on the instant triple talaq draft Bill.

The TS and AP governments have instructed their minorities welfare departments to take the views of the community. The department heads have been directed to hold meetings with leaders, scholars and important stake holders of the community before finalising their view.

Principal secretary, TS minorities welfare department, Syed Omer Jaleel said the department will hold a meeting with religious scholars other stake holders before reaching a conclusion.

The Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen had already opposed the proposed legislation. It wondered how the government could bring a legislation when there is confusion on the Supreme Court verdict.

Chairman of the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Council N. Md Farooq said the AP government had asked the minority welfare department to hold a meeting. “Suggestions of all stake holders of the Muslim community will be taken into account before finalising the view of the state government. A meeting will be held to take to discuss the draft before the government confirms its stand,” Mr Farooq said.

As per provisions of the draft bill, a man who resorts to instant triple talaq can be jailed for up to three years and be fined. Instant triple talaq in any form — oral, written or electronic form — has been banned and made a cognisable offence.

Once the proposed Muslim Woman Protec-tion of Rights on Marriage Bill is approved by Parliament, the law will adjudicate all cases of instant triple talaq across the country, except in t he state of Jammu and Kashmir.
