Salem train heist: DSP-led team gets vital clues in MP

Further investigation in the case would continue.

Chennai: The CB-CID police have arrested two accused in the Salem train heist. CB-CID relied on extensive technical analysis to obtain valuable clues. Acting on the clues, Krishnan, DSP, CB-CID, Salem city, and his team visited Madhya Pradesh and interacted with a few police personnel in Ujjain and Guna districts who had knowledge about interstate criminal gangs, read the statement.

“After making incessant efforts, DSP Krishnan collected credible information about the involvement of a gang led by Mohar Singh of Guna district (Madhya Pradesh) in this case. Moreover, meticulous efforts to collect various pieces of information including technical inputs and detailed analysis to sift them together has led to conclusive proof about the involvement of this gang,” it stated.

Based on the source information about the movement of two accused towards Chennai, Dinesh (38) s/o Banesingh Pardi, a resident of Ratlam, Madhya Pradesh and Rohan Pardi (29) s/o Ropla Pardi, a resident of Ratlam, Madhya Pradesh, have been arrested by CB-CID on October 12, 2018, at Chennai, the sleuths noted in the release.

“Upon interrogation, accused Dinesh and Rohan have confessed to the involvement of themselves and gang headed by Mohar Singh in this occurrence and the arrested accused have also revealed that, in the night of August 8, 2016, five of the gang members travelled on the roof top on moving train and cut the hole on the roof of the parcel van between Chinnasalem and Vriddhachalam railway stations,” the release said.

Two of them entered the parcel van through the hole, broke open the wooden boxes, took cash bundles, wrapped them in lungis, when the train was reaching Vriddhachalam railway station, those on the roof top gave the cash bundles wrapped in lungis to other gang members on the ground waiting on the trackside and then all of them went away, it noted.

Inquiries conducted at Madhya Pradesh have revealed that a few accused involved in this case including gang leader Mohar Singh are currently lodged in Guna central prison as they are involved in some other cases. CB-CID will take them into custody for interrogation. Efforts are being made to secure remaining accused absconding.

ADGP CBCID commended the outstanding work done by ADSP Senthil Kumaran, DSP Krishnan, SI Sastha Indhusekaran, SSI Samikannu, HC Dandapani in particular and many other officers and police personnel of CBCID who strived tirelessly day in and day out to solve this challenging case often risking their lives, the officials said. Further investigation in the case would continue.

It may be noted that the train, with the parcel van carrying cash, left Salem Railway JN at 9.5 pm on August 8,2016, and arrived at Egmore railway station at 3.5 am on August 9, 2016. When the parcel van was opened at 10.55 am by the authorities of RBI, it was found that an amount of Rs 5.78 crore was stolen from this railway parcel van, by miscreants after making a hole on the roof of the van.

In this connection, a case was registered in Govt. Railway Police, Egmore on August 9, 2016. Investigation in this case was transferred to Crime Branch CID on August 11, 2016.
