Prepaid mobile phone services restored in Kashmir after 3 months

The mobile telephony and Internet services were suspended following the Valley erupted in the aftermath of the killing of Burhan Wani.

Srinagar: Prepaid mobile telephone services are being restored in Kashmir from midnight, police said here late Friday evening adding that the decision was taken in view of the improvement in security situation in the Valley.

The mobile telephony and Internet services were suspended following the Valley erupted in the aftermath of the killing of Hizb-ul-Mujahedin commander Burhan Muzaffar Wani in an encounter with security forces on July 8. However, the post-paid mobile services on the state-owned BSNL connections were available and also incoming call facility on prepaid phones was restored a couple of weeks ago.

The Internet facility on fixed Boardband lines were also available expect on two occasions when these were also withdrawn for security reasons "discourage rumour-mongering" and remained suspended for days, evoking sharp criticism from business community, media organizations and students. The police statement said, “With the improvement in the situation prepaid mobile services are being restored from tonight.”
