Egmore gets all-women facilitation centre

Chennai Egmore railway station became the second station in the state to get all-women passenger facilitation centre.

CHENNAI: Chennai Egmore railway station became the second station in the state to get all-women passenger facilitation centre to cater to the needs and safety of women passengers. The centre to be manned by a woman RPF constable along with two women commercial staff would be open 24 hours a day and like the one at Chennai Central has a breastfeeding centre. The centre is functioning at platform 4 of Egmore railway station was inaugurated on Thursday by letting the service being used by the public.

Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, senior officials said these initiatives would make it easier for women passengers to travel comfortably even if they are alone. "Commuters can approach us for help or any basic enquiries. If there are improvements to be made, they can record it in the complaints register," said an official.

The centre also provides assistance to those who need wheelchairs, and a floor staff would ensure that these travellers are dropped to the facilities that they intend to use. There are provisions for assisting women with getting prepaid autos and taxis, medical help or retiring facilities, or catering to their requests and complaints. With the GRP office functioning from the same platform, any issues of police complaints will also be dealt with directly.
