Venkaiah Naidu slams Rohith Vemula's suicide protests

He noted that before the suicide of Vemula, 10 other students had ended their lives in the university.

Hyderabad: Union minister Venkaiah Naidu said on Saturday that those protesting on the issue of Rohith Vemula’s suicide should read and analyse his suicide letter before making accusations. Mr Naidu said Mr Raju Kumar Sahu, the general secretary of the UoH Students Union, had quit the Students Federation of India over political parties aiding protests in the university on Vemula’s suicide. He noted that before the suicide of Vemula, 10 other students had ended their lives in the university.

He was addressing a valedictory function of around 70 civil servants of the Union I&B ministry who had finished an executive course at the Indian School of Business. He also told ISB students that they could go abroad to “learn as well as earn” but should return to serve the country. The minister also criticised those who had participated in protests that took place against the killing of Kashmir militant Burhan Wani or the hanging of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru or Yakub Memon, who had a role in the 1993 Mumbai blasts, saying that insulting the Indian Army had become a trend. People who challenge the country’s integrity do not deserve mercy and there should be a united stand across the country on Kashmir, he said.
