Chhattisgarh Police raises Gulabi Gangs comprising women spies

Around 120 women have been picked up†in three wards of Raipur Municipal Corporation.

Raipur: Perhaps in first of its kind initiative, Chhattisgarh Police has raised “Gulabi Gangs” comprising only women spies to make policing more effective particularly in urban areas.

Around 120 women have been “picked up” in three wards of Raipur Municipal Corporation under community policing system to keep a tab on anti-social elements, particularly those who try to disturb communal harmony in their respective areas.

“We have constituted ‘Gulabi Gangs’ in three wards by picking up selected women in each wards to keep a vigil on criminals in their respective areas and inform the police immediately if they noticed unusual activities in their wards.

We have begun this as a pilot project. Later, such groups will be raised in the other urban areas in the state if the project succeeded,” police sources said on Saturday.

When contacted, a senior police officer, unwilling to be quoted, said, “Officially, I cannot confirm the development. But, unofficially, I can say we have raised groups of women spies to make policing more effective in state capital”.

The decision to raise “Gulabi Gang” was taken following spurt in incidents of seizures of narcotic substances and activities of disruptive elements like Leftwing ultras and Islamic radical wings in the state particularly in Raipur, the police officer said.

“Each member of the gang will be given formal training of spying and sharing vital information to the police without any delay. They will act as eyes and ears of the police in each ward. They will report to the in-charge of police stations in their respective areas,” he added.
