Hyderabad: The debate over whether EVM’s are tamper-proof continues as people have been asking whether the system was accurate or there was a need for further improvement and whether a paper ballot should also be used along with it.
The debate had Twitterati talking about it as they suspected that all the EVM’s had not been tamper-proof and there was a need for further checks to clear doubts.
Professor K. Nageshwar, a political analyst explained, “Technically there has not been any fault in the system. It is tamper-proof. Yet allegations have surfaced time and again and it is important that the Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail is counted in places where the margin is less than 1000 votes. In places where there is a margin of 20,000 votes, it cannot be stated that it is due to EVMs.”
But the internet software system is being used in multiple purposes across the world, the biggest being the online banking system. Hence, it becomes important to understand that there can be system failures and whenever it is found it has to be rectified.
Others are of the opinion that a paper ballot is the best to clear doubts. But the Election Commission is clear that counting of votes is not possible and hence the software has been developed.
Dr Rajat Kumar, Chief Electoral Officer of Telangana said, “There is no EVM tampering. Due to the parties making allegations in two constituencies Kodad and Thungathurthy, the VVPA slips are being counted.”
